A Place in the Sun: who is Danni Menzies' partner? Spring comes slowly to the garden. This is a very wet, cold place and the soil takes a while to warm up.

Yet from early January the signs are there with snowdrops and aconites appearing and the catkins on the hazels yellow with pollen. By March there is no going back.

The weather can still be very wintry but the garden is committed to Spring. The Spring garden was made to relish every possibility of the season and wave after wave of flower push forward culminating in mid May with the earliest species roses and the cow parsley which then takes over completely.

The various areas of long grass and wild flowers are rich with crocuses that are soon followed by narcissi, fritillaries and camassias.

The hedges start to prickle with new green leaves and the orchard trees billow with blossom. The final hurrah and dramatic colour comes from the radiant display of alliums and tulips in May.

There are two summer seasons in this garden. The first starts at the end of May and continues to mid July and then there is a noticeable shift as the light changes slightly and the whole garden heats up until September.

Throughout June the days are at their longest, the light at its brightest and all the deciduous foliage, be it of an aquilegia or oak tree, is full but still fresh.

Roses are at their best, large-flowered clematis are glorious and plants like Iris, foxgloves, alliums and lupins crown the borders.

There is a a real sense of the garden coming magnificently into being but still rich with the promise of more to come.

The Jewel garden really hits its stride in August and September despite the shortening days because the nights are warm and dahlias, bananas, zinnias, tithonia, sunflowers, helianthus, nicotiana and cosmos are flowering exuberantly.

By mid September the garden is gently beginning to become wraith-like and withdrawn. It is as though the garden is disappearing somewhere where I cannot follow.

But the lemon light of September is both radiant and wistful, touched simultaneously with glory and regret.

It is also the season of fruitfulness with the orchard providing over 50 different varieties of apples and the vegetable garden offering its final rich summer harvest.

Another autumnal harvest we treasure are the falling leaves. Every one is gathered and stored to make leaf-mould which rots down to become an essential component of our home-made potting compost and a perfect mulch for woodland plants.

We always hope for a cold, dry winter although with climate change a very wet, rather mild one is becoming all too common. But when it is wet for weeks and we do not see the sun at all for days on end then it is miserable and gardening dribbles to a soggy halt.

We do our best to ready the garden for winter by the end of November, protecting tender plants and clearing the decks and then hunker down in December and January before work begins again in earnest in February and the gardening year swings around again.

I intend to take some gardening leave for Joker Zeichnung rest of the summer to Jeux DEnfants Streaming a full recovery and so that I am ready to tackle new projects. Spoiler alert: it ended badly. Part of my rather grandiose plans were to carve the steep hillside into a series of terraces with a large lawn, rose terrace, bowling green and herb garden.

It had rained for most of October but I gambled on November being dominated by hard frosts that would enable us to move the thousands of tons of soil for day after day without creating a quagmire.

We had lovely September weather again here in Herefordshire, hot and dry and yet softened by exquisite light, and this glorious late-season weather seems a pattern emerging out of climate change, but we know it is all borrowed from summer and when October arrives with the accompaniment of rain, winds and plummeting temperatures at least it feels as though the balance of the seasons are reasserting themselves.

The weather in August was pretty miserable here in the garden. We had a swelteringly hot, humid first half followed by constant, wind, gales and then unseasonable cold.

It felt as though the seasons had skipped a month and October was knocking at the door. But September is the mediator.

It is the true link between summer and autumn and, in its gentle light and slow drift can be one of the loveliest times of the year.

August is really a new season and carries the weight of summer and the seeds of winter. Much of the garden is coming to full fruition with flowers, fruits and vegetables all ripening and acquiring a fulsome quality that no other month matches.

But at the same time this is clearly a kind of ending and the demands of spring and summer growth start to show.

About Monty Monty Don O. In , Don and Erskine started Monty Don Jewellery, a London-based business that designed, made, and sold costume jewellery.

The company became a success and in five years, operated from a shop on Beauchamp Place in Knightsbridge with hundreds of outworkers and had secured as many as 60 outlets across the US, including Harrods , Harvey Nichols , and Liberty.

However, the stock market crash caused an almost complete bankruptcy as it cut off American sales, their biggest market. Reflecting on the experience, he wrote: "We were lambs to the slaughter and we lost everything, [ We sold every stick of furniture we had at Leominster market".

He was unemployed from to , and spent all of on the dole. By mid, Don had written several gardening articles and granted writers access to his home garden which was featured in various publications.

This increased exposure led to Don writing a gardening column for the Mail on Sunday , a book deal, and an invitation to a screen test for a proposed weekly live gardening segment on the ITV television breakfast show This Morning.

Though he had some doubts being a presenter, he took the jobs as he felt desperate for work. During Don's initial stint, viewing figures fell from 5 million to 2 million, this fall being most frequently blamed on the BBC's decision to change the show's format soon after Don's arrival.

When he returned as host in , Don began to present from his own garden, Longmeadow. In , Don introduced viewers to his new golden retriever, Nell.

Don is also known for writing and presenting his own series. In , he setup a 6-acre 2. Don's next series was Monty Don's Paradise Gardens in , travelling across the Islamic world and beyond in search of paradise gardens and considering their place in the Quran.

Don has described himself primarily as a writer, "who happens to have lots of television work. He later described them as "excruciatingly bad".

The column began in February of that year and lasted until May ; Jenkins was his editor for seven years. Between and Don was President of the Soil Association.

Don had never received formal training as a gardener. He commented, "I was — am — an amateur gardener and a professional writer. My only authority came from a lifetime of gardening and a passion amounting to an obsession for my own garden.

Don is a keen proponent of organic gardening , becoming "officially" organic in his own garden in The organic approach is most prominent in his book The Complete Gardener.

This has led him into some controversy with those advocating non-organic techniques, with some criticising his position of influence presenting Gardeners' World and exclusion of non-organic solutions to pests and diseases in the garden.

Don's sartorial style in the garden has been the subject of some critical attention, with Richard D. North commenting, in [54]. He is not quite the Mr McGregor of the Potter books: real-life ancient gardeners wore mighty cords and moleskins, tweeds and flannels — and sacks if the weather was bad enough.

The Don affectation is one tad more painterly than that. I guess that this is where we come up against the row within Monty Don, between the lightly earthy garden enthusiast and the grimmer unworldly hippy moralist.

Well, we all have an inner cheerfully accepting Cavalier, and it does battle with our gloomier Roundhead. In Don himself dedicated a whole column to this subject, commenting: [55].

I get lots of emails, lots of letters. A few are crazed, quite a few astonishingly demanding These are the ones asking me about the clothes that I garden in.

Prospect magazine declared Don "the nation's gardener". Don married Sarah Erskine in They have two sons, Adam and Tom, and daughter Freya. The couple then moved to the De Beauvoir Town area of Hackney where they made their first garden.

The making of the garden there, and the subsequent loss of the house in the aftermath of the crash of their jewellery business, was the subject of Don's first book, The Prickotty Bush.

In , the Dons bought a home in Ivington , Herefordshire where they started to create a new garden named Longmeadow.

The home was unfit to live in at the time of purchase, so while they refurbished it they rented a home in Leominster that was infested with rats and had no heating.

Don has owned many dogs throughout his adult life. He also owns dogs that are not featured on the show. Don said that Nigel had been more than a companion and had helped him with his struggles with depression.

Don has suffered with depression since his mid-twenties. After receiving cognitive behavioural therapy and taking Prozac , Don quit both when he realised his depression was mostly seasonal and found relief with a lightbox , now a recognised aid for seasonal affective disorder.

In August , Don suffered from a bout of peritonitis , an abdominal infection. His wife had found him unconscious on the floor and he was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery.

In February , Don suffered from a minor stroke at home. He had been feeling unwell since the Christmas prior, mostly due to exhaustion from travelling to film Around the World in 80 Gardens.

When his symptoms did not improve, a brain scan weeks later revealed a temporary blockage in one of his arteries to the brain.

In May , he put his career on hold to recover. In , Don said that years of gardening had left him with sore knees, one of which causes constant pain and needs replacing.

Shortly before he fell ill with his stroke, Don had launched the Monty Don Project, a charity to help persistent offenders and drug addicts heal themselves by working the land.
